Persephone by George Braque First Time Offering to the Public

Not only will Art Basel Miami 2008 host the world’s best in art, design and culture this year, but also provide many first time views at exclusive offerings by renowned artists. Such will be the case at “Rock the Boat” where Martin du Louvre will present a unique work by George Braque titled Persephone.

Braque’s mosaic sculpture portrays the essence of Cubism and the lesser known form of Purism while recounting the mythological tale of Persephone. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of King Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the earth; however, Persephone was taken by Hades thus leaving Demeter to mourn. During mourning, the earth would evolve into autumn and winter, but six months of the year, Persephone was allowed to return with the resultant celebration of spring and summer.
Braque’s ingenious use of intersecting positives and negatives, profile and frontal views, and the seasonal adornments of a winter hat and summer bonnet, elegantly updates this ancient tale, underscoring its perennial charm and bringing it into the modern era. The sculpture stands 51” in height.
