Explore Amazing Design and Architecture of Ice

Every year around mid November, a team of snow builders, architects, designers and artists assemble in a small town just north of the artic circle in Sweden. In Jukkasjarvi along the Torne River, steel frames are constructed that serve as templates for what will become this year’s ICEHOTEL. Every year, a different design is created yielding a unique experience for its guests. From early December until spring, the ultimate surreal ice escape awaits those who seek the exotic.

A Different Type of Luxury Vacation Rental

Snow is sprayed onto the steel frames and allowed to freeze for a couple of days; then the frames are removed and the basic form of this year’s ICEHOTEL appears. Dividing walls are made to enable suites and rooms to be segmented, and artists and designers have an abundance of iceblocks from the Torne River from which to create exquisite masterpieces. As the ICEHOTEL is assembled, a phased opening occurs between December 10th and January 7th when all the frozen luxury villas are complete. Other special highlights of the ICEHOTEL include the ABSOLUT ICEBAR serving cool cocktails in a “hot” atmosphere, the ICEHOTEL restuarant serving exquisite cuisine on ice plates, and the Ice Church which opens December 23rd.

How the ICEHOTEL was Inspired

In 1990, French Ice Artist Jannot Derit held an exhibit opening in Jukkasjarvi in a 60 square meter igloo called “Artic Hall.” The experience was inspiring as were comments made by visitors expressing the unique atmosphere of sleeping within an igloo in the midst of the Artic. Founder and CEO Yngve Bergqvist took this inspiration and made the ICEHOTEL the reality it is today. Indeed, it has been voted the best experience in Sweden.

Ashes to Ashes, Ice to Water

As spring arrives each year, the ICEHOTEL returns to the Torne River. In fact, ICEHOTEL has plans to be completely carbon dioxide free by 2015. Even now, the electricity it uses is 100% renewable being generated by wind, water and biofuels. What it takes from the environment, it returns each passing season.
