World’s Oldest Wine Auction raises $7.5 MM, Prince Andrea Casiraghi guest of honor

The vintage wine market had an interesting weekend, to say the least. Not only was Prince Andrea Casiraghi a guest of honor at the 149th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction, the charitable auction also raised total of 5 million euros ($7.5 million) with fees, the second-highest in its 150-year history. Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction, held every year in France, is the world's oldest charity wine auction. Organized by the Burgundy- based hospital network in collaboration with Christie's oenophiles bidded in the medieval Halles de Beaune. Christie's International attributed the surge in demand for the new vintage to the offering of a record 802 barrels from vineyards belonging to the hospital, founded in 1443. "Fierce bidding resulted from nearly 500 private and professional participants from all parts of the world," said auctioneer Emmanuelle Vidal-Delagneau.He also noted that: 40% of the wine was bought from afar by telephone, Internet and faxed bids. 57% ...

Hermès Handling the Troubled Economy Better than Expected

Although Hermès has not been immune from the downward turn in the global economy, they have weathered the situation better than expected. While their net profit fell seven percent in the first half of 2009, their turnover totaled 874.9 million euros, which is up 7.6 percent at current exchange rates. According to the company, who's net income was reduced to 125.4 million euros, profit was "curtailed by the decline in the rate of return on financial investments and by the impact of valuation adjustments on foreign exchange instruments." Moncler Creates Long-term Partnerships with Visvim & Giambattista Valli

Moncler is partnering with Visvim (a "street-meets-art" Japanese brand) to launch a menswear collection. The collection will be named Moncler V, and the Fall 2010 collection is scheduled to debut in January 2010. Speaking about the partnership, Remo Ruffini, who is the creative director and chairman of Moncler, said "I felt that Japanese designers could be intriguing to work with for Moncler to capture the important market for the brand and to revive our archives."
